A beautiful 19th century French cartonnage edition of Voyage in Sicily and Malta by Patrick Brydone, published by Alfred Mame et Fils in Tours in 1864. This is the seventh edition of Brydone’s celebrated travel account documenting Sicily and Malta.
The binding is especially elaborate, with brilliant blue, white and gold decoration surrounding a detailed inset landscape scene. The interior is illustrated with engraved views, including Palermo Cathedral and other sites encountered throughout the journey.
Inside is an original handwritten 1868 school prize presentation insert from the Collège de Thann, recording the book as a prize awarded to a student. A wonderful piece of surviving provenance and a reminder that these exceptionally decorative bindings were often created as presentation and prize books.
Good antique condition overall with beautiful color and gilt remaining. Age related wear is present, including some wear and losses along the spine and corners, as pictured.
