A beautiful 19th century French cartonnage book, History of the French Colonies and French Settlements in America, Africa, Asia and Oceania by J. J. E. Roy, published by Mame in Tours in 1858.
This example has an especially elaborate blue, gold and white binding with raised floral decoration and a wonderfully detailed inset coastal scene to the front cover. The interior includes engraved illustrations depicting episodes from French colonial history.
A particularly charming detail is the original handwritten 1859 school prize presentation insert inside, documenting the book as a prize awarded to a student. These surviving presentation pieces add a wonderful layer of provenance and show how beautifully bound books like this were often given as academic awards in 19th century France.
In really good antique condition overall with the colors and gilt decoration remaining beautifully vibrant. Light age related wear throughout with a little more visible wear at the bottom corner of the spine, as pictured.
