A striking and unusually large 19th century French cartonnage book, The Ocean and Its Phenomena, published in Rouen by Mégard et Cie in 1884.
This example is significantly larger than the typical cartonnage books in the collection, measuring approximately two inches taller than many of the others. The elaborate cover features coral, white and gold decoration with floral detailing and a dramatic inset maritime scene. The book includes engraved illustrations relating to the ocean, exploration and natural phenomena.
Good antique condition overall. The covers retain beautiful color and gilt detail with light age related wear. Some wear is present along the spine and edges, with expected toning and scattered foxing to the interior pages. Overall a very handsome example, especially desirable for its larger scale.
