A remarkable 19th century tortoiseshell double inkwell, showcasing the rich depth and natural variation that make genuine tortoiseshell objects so highly prized. The rectangular base is beautifully polished, with warm amber and chestnut tones throughout, and is fitted with two original crystal inkwells featuring sharply faceted edges that catch the light with subtle brilliance. Each inkwell is topped with a silver-mounted hinged lid and accompanied by a central wooden pen rest, completing the composition.
Measuring approximately 10 inches wide by 5 inches deep, this piece is in excellent antique condition. Both crystal inkwells are perfectly preserved with no chips or cracks, the tortoiseshell presents beautifully, and the hinges function smoothly. An exceptional and increasingly difficult-to-find desk object, equally suited to a library, writing table, or collector’s cabinet, where form, material, and craftsmanship can be fully appreciated.
