A particularly early French cartonnage example dating to 1844. The deep blue black binding and incredibly elaborate raised gilt decoration are characteristic of some of the earlier cartonnage styles, before the brighter colors and pictorial covers that became popular later in the century. The scale and richness of the gilding make this an especially striking example. Excellent spine integrity with only light wear at the top and bottom of the spine.
