Early 19th century French Creil creamware transferware fable plate depicting “Les Devineresses” (The Fortune Tellers) from Jean de La Fontaine’s Fables, Book VII, Fable XV. The scene illustrates La Fontaine’s satirical tale of fortune tellers who confidently claim to predict the future for others while remaining blind to their own misfortunes. Like many of his fables, it offers a gentle lesson about human vanity and the folly of trusting appearances. The finely detailed black transfer is framed by an elegant grapevine border. Measures 8.25 inches in diameter. Very good antique condition with light age related crazing and expected wear. One hairline.
