Marcus Curtius was a legendary Roman hero who rode his horse into a great chasm that had opened in the Forum after an oracle declared it could only be closed by Rome’s greatest strength. Believing courage was Rome’s greatest virtue, Curtius sacrificed himself, and the gulf closed behind him.
